The Mother and the Whore (La Maman et le putain)

One of the milestone films of the 1970s, Jean Eustache’s nearly four-hour masterpiece chronicles the lives of three twenty-something Parisians, unemployed would-be intellectual Alexandre (Jean-Pierre Léaud), his live-in girlfriend Marie, and Veronika, a beautiful Polish nurse he picks up in a cafe. The impossibility of this love triangle soon leads to jealousy and moments of raw emotion and uncertainty. Despite its minimal plot, the film is exhilarating to watch—it’s a singular depiction of a particular time and place, and of the ennui felt by many young Parisians after the political upheavals of May 1968.

After being shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria, aristocratic-born Viola assumes her twin brother is dead and takes on the identity of a young male page named Cesario in an attempt to gain work in an unfamiliar land. Her compromised identity puts her at the center of a complicated love triangle that is hilarious and melancholy, and always entertaining. Under the direction of award-winning Northwestern faculty member Mary Poole, Shakespeare’s classic comedy is a delightful adventure in the timeless human folly of mistaken identity and misguided hearts.

Frank Vignola

Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world's top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his "Five Most Admired Guitar List" for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola's jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him "one of the brightest...stars of the guitar".
Born on suburban Long Island on December 30, 1965, Vignola was raised in the New York area. The Italian-American started playing the guitar at the age of six and grew up admiring a variety of guitarists. Far from a jazz snob, Vignola never listened to jazz exclusively and was also a major fan of classical, rock, R&B, and pop. The guitarists that he admires range from Django and Les Paul to rock icons like Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen. As a young adult, Vignola studied at the Cultural Arts Center of Long Island and went on to enjoy an enormous amount of sideman gigs in the 1980s including recording and touring with the likes of Madonna, Leon Redbone, Ringo Starr as well as coming into his own as a leader in 1988 with his famed Hot Club of France tribute which was hailed in the NY Times as one of the top ten acts in New York City in 1988 and forged the way for the many Django Hot Club groups that followed. The New Yorker was 27 when, in 1993, he signed with Concord Jazz and recorded his first Concord session as a leader, Appel Direct. Many more Concord releases followed in the 1990s as well as 3 releases for the Telarc label as co-leader of the group Travelin' Light. The early 2000's found Vignola recording a solo guitar CD for Acoustic Disc as well as performing regularly with guitarist, Les Paul. This also marked the time that Frank began working with record producer Joel Dorn as well as making featured appearances on Atlantic, Sony and Warner Brothers Records with the likes of Donald Fagen, Queen Latifah, Mark O Connor and Wynton Marsalis. He also recorded a collection of Gershwin pieces for Mel Bay Records titled, "Vignola Plays Gershwin" which was number 2 in NPR radio airplay charts. In recent years, Vignola has recorded two important collaborative CD's, "Just Between Frets" with Tommy Emmanuel on Solid Air Records and "Frank-N-Dawg, Melody Monsters" with mandolinist David Grisman on Acoustic Disc Records.
Frank has written 18 guitar instruction books for Mel Bay Publications and has recorded 6 Educational DVD's for Truefire.com. He has performed hundreds of clinics and masterclasses at major universities and colleges throughout the world including Julliard and Boston University. Currently, Vignola is touring world wide.

Dark Dark Dark revel in the world around us. On their sophomore album Wild Go, the chamber-folk sextet creates a stirring reminder to seek out the wonder and magic to be found in the everyday. Their sound sets Nona Marie Invie's soaring, haunting voice against an array of acoustic instruments, all the while leaving room for the listener to nestle themselves inside and take part.
The 10-song collection is a marked evolution for the group, which began in 2006 as a collaboration between Minneapolis based musicians Nona Marie Invie and Marshall LaCount. These two songwriters bring together disparate influences including minimalism, New Orleans jazz, Americana, Eastern European folk, and pop. With stark contrast in texture, tone and imagery, the band has expanded and redefined their sound.
Wild Go's first single “Daydreaming” features Invie's warm voice and piano supported by spare, clean drums, guitar with lush reverb, cascades of dirty, distorted banjo, and an accordion wandering through the harmonies. Written in response to Elephant Micah's homesick dirge “Wild Goose Chase”, the song illustrates the growth of the band's sound and songwriting over the past two years. “'Wild Goose Chase' really touched me,” Invie says. “I wanted to reciprocate in a way that captured a moment in my own life. I've been traveling and touring for so long now – and it's been great – but I have this internal conflict between having a nomadic lifestyle and needing a home.”
In the studio the band worked with producer Tom Herbers (a Minneapolis stalwart known for his credits with the Jayhawks, Low, and Soul Asylum), recording live to tape at three different Minneapolis locations including a renovated church/studio and an old theater. Of all the influences on Wild Go, perhaps the greatest is their dedication to live performance and touring, where many of Dark Dark Dark's songs first come to life. Playing together, the band lifts Invie and LaCount's songs to another level.
“We try to create a magical space with our performances,” Invie reveals. “I'm always blown away by the number of people that come up to me afterward and say how much the music touched them. I love it when people can dance and have fun at our shows, but it's when people are quiet and I can tell that they are feeling it on a personal level that I feel like I'm really connecting.”
Wild Go was released in October 2010 in the US on Supply & Demand Music, and will be released April 2011 on Melodic in the UK and Europe.
